Planet Chasers: Starlight Excellent is a video tape shown in the episode "Brain Eraser"
Appearance
The tape looks like a regular video tape. When played, the tape shows several anime characters fighting and doing crazy things.
Effects
Planet Chasers: Starlight Excellent has the ability to extract the memories of whoever watches it. When a person watches the video, they enter a zoned out state and the video wipes the victims memories out from their eyes in the form of film reel.
History
After Mordecai sees Pops naked and cannot stop thinking about it, Rigby struggles to find a way to get him to forget. All of Rigby's attempts fail until he and Mordecai go to the video rental store, where Rigby finds the video store clerk zoned while watching the video. Rigby "borrows" the tape and makes Mordecai watch it. However, the tape immerses them inside the show, chasing the naked Pops while in a golf cart. When caught soon after, the gang manages to exit the show, and are sent back to the living room on the couch, covered in videotape. It is implied after that they may have had to repeat the process of brain erasing again, due to Mordecai, Rigby and Skips seeing Benson naked immediately after.
Trivia
- The anime tape seems to be a parody of Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and a handful of other action and magical girl-based anime; the video itself seems to be based on Toonami's anime montages. Hori (the blonde-haired girl) seems to be a parody of Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Venus, and also bares a striking resemblance to Yumemi's alternative appearance in Touhou Yumejikuu ~ Phantasmagoria of Dim Dream; the 'main character' Kono has somewhat of a resemblance to Astro Boy from the series of the same name. Naze's appearance greatly resembles that of a Saiyan in Dragon Ball Z.
- In addition, the show is similar to an episode of Pokémon called "Dennou Senshi Porygon" (電脳戦士ポリゴン, lit. "Cyber Police Porygon") which gave hundreds of Japanese kids seizures, hence why Rigby said, "It's like, barfing rainbows at my eyes!" Another reason was the technique, Paka Paka, is used with red and blue flashing strobe lights.
- Coincidentally, people negatively reviewed the CN series "The Problem Solverz", best known for very flashy content, bright colors, and fast-moving patterns.
- The lyrics of the song played during its showing are: Ichi ni san shi go, Ichi ni san shi go, Ichi ni san shi go, Moshi moshi!
- In English, the first three lines are numbers 1-5 and the fourth means "Hello," and is to be said over the phone in Japan.
- The music style and lyrics may be a reference to the anime movie Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, which was an anime movie scored by the band Daft Punk. It featured no dialogue and had scenes edited to match the musical score's rhythm.
- The video store clerk calls the anime "Planet Chasers Starlight Excellent", while Skips calls it "Planet Starlight Chasers Excellent".
- "Moshi moshi!" can be misinterpreted as "ikimashou", a Japanese phrase that exclaims emotion, directly translating to "Let's go!"
- It is possibly named after Odin: Photon Sailer Starlight
- The characters, minus Hori, are all named after parts of speech in Japanese. Kono means "this," which is a pronoun. Naze means "why," which is an adverb.
- Rigby is unaffected by the tape the first time he watches it in the video store. However, this is likely because he did not pay enough attention to it, due to becoming grossed out by it too quickly.
