The Power is the first episode of Regular Show's first season. It first aired on September 6, 2010 and was written & storyboarded by JG Quintel.

Official Synopsis

Mordecai and Rigby find a mysterious keyboard that allows them to do anything they want, including accidentally sending Skips to the moon.

Plot

Mordecai and Rigby are both messing around in their room, wrestling with a doll named "Beef Burrito". While doing this, they accidentally bust a huge hole in their wall. Panicking, they quickly realize that the only solution to the fix the hole is by convincing Benson to give them a raise. Rigby suggests they "hambone" to convince him, but Mordecai is adamant that they're not doing that, despite Rigby's claims that "hamboning will save your life some day". Rigby then has an other idea, and shows Mordecai a magical keyboard which he stole from a wizard who was relieving himself in a bush. Mordecai is unsure that the keyboard will have any effect on Benson, until Rigby plays a tune and convinces him otherwise. Prompted by Rigby to name the keyboard, Mordecai calls it "The Power".

In the Park, Mordecai and Rigby practice a dance routine to brainwash Benson, when Pops arrives. Rigby suggests that they should test The Power out on Pops, given his naivety and the likelihood of not yelling at them. Mordecai obliges and they brainwash Pops, who offers them two butterscotch ripple lollipops instead of regular money. Realizing that The Power works, they run off to find Benson and get their raises. Elsewhere, Benson is frustrated, taking tools out of the shed, when Mordecai and Rigby arrive and get his attention. They perform their dance routine and nervously attempt to brainwash Benson. It works, and Benson gives them $20 each. Mordecai is excited to now fix the hole, but Rigby explains that with The Power, they can do everything they've ever wanted to do.

They use The Power to do various crazy things, from creating a bouncy castle from thin air and turning it into a rocket, to gaining the ability to fly. Sometime later, they bump into Skips. He confronts them about their sudden ability to fly, and they retaliate by using The Power to brainwash him. Mordecai sings to send Skips back to his room, but Rigby mishears and sings to send him to the moon. Skips suddenly vanishes and Rigby is confronted by Mordecai, who realizes that it's up to them to rescue Skips. Benson and Pops arrive on the scene and question the whereabouts of Skips, which Mordecai willingly tells them. They agree to assist Mordecai and Rigby in their rescue mission, despite Benson not believing them. Using The Power, Mordecai and Rigby sing to send the group to the moon while sat in a golf cart.

Arriving on the moon, the cart tips over and Benson notices that its surface is covered in "junk". Rigby confesses that back on Earth, he sent a bunch of stuff to the moon out of boredom, including a bunch of baby ducks, a broken soda machine, and a giant monster who is chasing after Skips. Rigby and Benson head off to save Skips while Mordecai and Pops stay behind to flip the cart back over. The monster is now holding Skips in his fist, ready to eat him. Rigby attempts to make the monster disappear with The Power but while doing so, its batteries die. Rigby then remembers his earlier discussion with Mordecai about how "hamboning will save your life some day" and runs towards the monster and hambones on its ankle. With the monster distracted, Skips breaks free from its fist and grabs Rigby to return to the cart. The monster starts chasing after them, getting closer each second. With the batteries dead, Skips finds an other solution to charge The Power back up by ripping some wires out of the cart's dashboard and plugging them into it. The group use The Power to return home, moments before they would have been crushed by the now-stranded monster.

Returning home, the group lands in Mordecai and Rigby's room, causing all of the drywall to collapse, minus the drywall surrounding the hole they busted earlier. Benson takes The Power from Rigby and gives it to Skips, who destroys it as punishment for sending him to the moon. Benson demands that he receives the $40 he gave them back, and they oblige. He then threatens to fire them if they don't clean up the mess in their room, before leaving with Pops and Skips. Rigby discovers that the hole is still in the wall, hoping that Benson didn't notice it. Mordecai picks up a poster from the floor and sticks it over the hole, claiming that Benson won't be able to notice it now. Mordecai and Rigby high-five and the episode ends.

Initial Broadcast & Reception

• The episode premiered on Cartoon Network on September 6, 2010 at 8.15pm as part of the channel's Monday Nights block, following the premiere of Adventure Time's "Rainy Day Daydream" and preceding the series premiere for MAD, "Avaturd / CSiCarly".
• This episode received 2.10 million views domestically in the United States.

• This is JG Quintel's favorite episode of the series.^[3]

Worldbuilding

• Mordecai and Rigby are revealed to be 23 years old.

Continuity

• Mordecai and Rigby relive the first minute of this episode, as a result of interfering with Pops' battle against Anti-Pops, in the final episode of the series, "A Regular Epic Final Battle".
  • Within the same episode, Mordecai and Rigby use the titular keyboard to travel to the end of the universe.
• The Power would later be repaired as part of the Hyperduck fusion in "A Bunch of Full Grown Geese". It would also be seen in Mordecai’s closet in various episodes, both in its broken and fixed state.
• The Wizard whom Rigby stole the keyboard from would later be established as a member of the Magical Elements, a competitive sports team led by Death.^[4][5]
• The events of this episode are referenced in "Brilliant Century Duck Crisis Special", with Rigby wishing not to die on the moon again.

Pop Culture References

• Rigby's wrestling doll bears a resemblance to the Hulk Hogan WWF Wrestling Buddy doll.
• The music during the montage scene is in homage to the song Tom Sawyer by Rush.

Adaptations

• Elements from this episode were later adapted into three games on the Cartoon Network website, with "Put the Hurt on Him!", "Escape from the Moon" and "Power Keys".
  • The former two games were also made available on mobile devices through "Just a Regular Arcade".

Goofs

• The TV is turned off when Rigby jumps on the doll.
• After Rigby drinks a can of soda, it disappears in the next shot, along with its spilled contents.
• The notes on the "The Power keyboard" changes shape, size and number across various scenes.
  • Alongside that, the engraved words on the keyboard, "The Power" disappear in various scenes.
• The keyboard disappears in some shots when Mordecai and Rigby are using The Power on their coworkers.
• Mordecai and Rigby's sweaters disappear after sending Skips to the moon.
• Whilst Rigby is sending stuff to the moon, the cart has headlights.
• When the group disappears from the cart, the cart is missing a fourth pole which holds the roof.
• Mordecai and Rigby disappear when Benson, Pops and Skips exit their bedroom.
• The hole changes positions multiple times throughout the episode.

• Instead of Rigby stealing the keyboard from a wizard, he was originally set to reveal that he won it as a prize for sending 1,000 box tops to a cereal company.
  • The way in which Rigby obtains the box tops was also set to be shown as a flashback with Rigby begging Pops for his box tops while hamboning on him. Pops would scream and cry that he can have them.
• Mordecai was set to ask Rigby if The Power had a record function, leading to a gag where the whole conversation was repeated by the keyboard's recorder.
• Pops was originally given more dialogue when giving Mordecai and Rigby their lollipops, telling them that it's their money and that they're free to spend it on whatever they want.
• Originally, the montage would result in Mordecai and Rigby eating tacos on a giant keyboard, then magically transforming into tacos, with Mordecai taking a bite out of Rigby.
• Mordecai was set to use The Power to convince Benson of its magical abilities, by making a cup float. The cup then slowly transforms into Skips, but Mordecai reverses it.
• Instead of Skips pulling wires out of the cart's dashboard, it was originally written that Mordecai would find some batteries in the cart's glove compartment.
• When the group return to Earth, they originally landed in front of Pops' house, rather than in Mordecai and Rigby's room.

Alternate Versions

USA

On Cartoon Network USA reruns, streaming services and the Season 1 and 2 DVD & Blu-Ray, the following lines are changed:

• "How in the H are we gonna fix this S?" is changed to "How in the heck are we gonna fix this stuff?"
• "But he's gonna be pissed!" is changed to "But he's gonna be ticked!"

UK

• "How in the H are we gonna fix this S?" was changed to "How in the H are we gonna fix this hole?"
• "But he's gonna be pissed!" was changed to "But he's gonna be miffed!
• "The $40 you two conned out of me with that stupid keyboard crap!" was changed to "The $40 you two conned out of me with that stupid keyboard crud!"
• Mordecai and Rigby calling each other "holes" was cut.
• "Don't look at our crotches while we synchronize our watches!" was cut.

• The scene following a wizard urinating in a bush was shortened, cutting out his heavy breathing and the sound of his zipper opening.
  • In addition to this, the sound of urination was lowered.
